Stare Mesto: from the Old Town Square to the Powder Gate

Prague - Stare Mesto

Walk - About 2 hours - 5€ (ex. suppl.2€)

This walk is concentrating on the liveliest area of the Czech capital: Stare Mesto, or the “Old Town”. This district offers a condensed account of 10 centuries of history. Everything blends together here, a fact that has played a decisive role in its destiny. The result is a district that is at the same time, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and even Cubist … as we’ll discover towards the end of our tour.
This walk begins on the Old Town Square in the very heart of Stare Mesto. The sheer number of magnificent and evocative buildings dating from key events in Bohemia’s history is truly astounding. Of course we’ll be seeing the belfry with its famous clock, the churches of St Nicholas and Our Lady before Tyn as well as the Baroque Goltz-Kinsky Palace.
We’ll then leave the Old Town Square and visit the stately Charles University – or Carolinum- then the Mozart Theatre, before walking up the Baroque styled Celetna Street to end our tour at the edge of Stare Mesto, beside the Powder Tower and the Municipal House, a magnificent Art Nouveau building.
If you have time for only one tour of Prague, it has to be this one.
