This audio walk will introduce you to the historical centre of the city. It will take us from the central square known as the Dam to the town’s oldest marketplace, Nieuwmarkt. Together we’ll discover the monuments that created landmarks in the architectural history of Amsterdam, such as the Royal Palace, a former town hall financed by merchants, or the Stock Exchange building, Beurs van Berlage, which symbolised the commercial and architectural revival of the city in the early 20th century. The New Church and the Old Church will give us an opportunity to admire the splendour of Gothic architecture and the red-light district will welcome us with its characteristic “windows” displaying scantily-clad ladies to the passer-by. We’ll cross through Chinatown to finally reach the old market place on Nieuwmarkt.
