The Forum was ancient Rome’s main political and religious centre. As we walk from the Triumphal Arch of Septimius Severus at one end of the Forum to the Arch of Titus at the other, we shall be surrounded by all the vestiges of the Roman Republic: its temples; basilicas (assembly halls at the time); squares in which historic figures such as Caesar, Cicero, Augustus and Titus made their speeches to the crowds; and its senate, of course, where the representatives of the people decided on the politics of the city. A journey back in time that takes us from the origins of Rome to the final decline of the Empire.
