Novel
Legend has it that the Aventine Hill is one of Rome’s earliest hills, for it was here that Remus chose to settle, while his brother Romulus opted for the Capitol. What we find here is a different Rome, one not much visited by tourists. A calm Rome, almost rural, peppered with convents, peaceful gardens and private homes. Strolling on the Aventine gives a brief respite from the noise and rush of modern Rome. Our visit takes us to Savello Park at the top of the hill, which offers the visitor one of the finest views of the city. There we will discover the charming 5th century Basilica of Santa Sabina, one of the oldest in Rome. Its simple architecture – luminous and harmonious – is also the repository of one of the oldest representations of the Crucifixion and a wooden door carved in the 5th century.
