At the beginning of the 18th century and at the cost of much human toil, Saint Petersburg rose up from the Neva delta. The city became know as the window to the West so fulfilling the dream of Peter the 1st, the greatest of all tsars. Inspired by Versailles, Saint Petersburg boasts a harmoniously proportioned architecture. The various styles are a reflection of the tsars who commissioned these buildings and include of course Peter the 1st as well as Catherine the Philosopher, Paul the 1st and Alexander the Diplomat.
