The existing vestiges on the Palatine hill will demonstrate to us how this well-to-do residential quarter became the Emperor’s domain. We will follow the evolution, from the ruins of the Domus Augustana – the house of Augustus, the first emperor – to Nero’s gigantic palace, which covered practically the entire hill. This excess went hand in hand with a politics of spectacle, of which the Coliseum is the best example. At the height of the Empire, this gigantic 50,000-seat amphitheater had 175 days of events per year!
